New Kitchen

Published by Christine at 12:02 am under Kitchen renovation

What sort of person would start a food blog at the same time as a kitchen renovation? Certainly not a very pragmatic one. It does help to have a working stove and oven in order to be able to cook the meals that one wishes to write about. I personally would laugh at such silliness, if the silly person didn’t happen to be me.

Yep, The Flexitarian strikes again.

Granted, my timing for starting this writing project may have been a little bit off, but it has taught me a few things. First of all, a kitchen demolition is A LOT messier (and potentially dangerous) than I ever imagined. Second, one doesn’t need very many things to put together a decent meal: one pot, a big knife and a large spoon (along with a stove top that was not broken by, say, a falling crowbar) are all that is needed. Third, wonderful friends who feed you when the project gets out of hand are truly a blessing (thanks, Mary and Sean!). So is pizza delivery.

So far, I’ve been able to put together a good number of meals, some of which I’ve blogged about here, with just the two unbroken burners on my ceramic cooktop, a toaster oven and a microwave. The way I see it, it’s a lot better than my grandmother had it for a long time, and still better than most people in this world. So really, it’s not so bad, and I’m not complaining. It makes for some interesting moments, only inasmuch as everything has been taken out of the kitchen, and it’s at times hard to find what I’m looking for. But a sense of humor helps, and I’m enjoying the frontier aspect of it all.

For those of you who are interested, I’m including a few pictures of the renovation so far. I’ll be making regular updates, so be sure to check back in!

Starting the demo...

Rob is all demo'ed out, with some stitches to prove he's a real renovation warrior.

My daughter and I inscribed our pancake recipe inside the wall. Someday, someone will be in for a surprise.

Soffits out and walls back up.

Floor boards are ready to be tiled.

The tile border (floor) goes in.

Jeez Louise, Rob, what the heck did you do?? Hey, remember my fun BBQ where I hacked off part of my thumb and was bleeding out even as I served dinner? Good times…

Looking forward to seeing more pics as the reno progresses. Hang in there, it will be totally worth it!

    xo,

    hello
un renovation warrior porte toujours sur lui une énorme perceuse. Et là, je ne la vois pas. Perceuse est à prendre ici au sens propre, il y a en trop qui ont des idées décalées, je tiens à le dire!
